Register now for UIS’ Fall 2020 Lunch & Learn Series

The University of Illinois Springfield will hold six virtual Lunch & Learn Series events this fall. The “Timely Talks on Timeless Topics in Celebration of UIS’ 50th Anniversary” series is presented by the UIS Alumni SAGE Society and the Illinois State Historical Society. All programs will be held via Zoom 

Thursday, Oct. 8 – Pandemics and Epidemics: Past and Present
Presenter: Dr. Donald Graham, infectious disease specialist at SIU School of Medicine and Springfield Clinic
Moderator: William Furry, executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society 

Wednesday, Oct. 21 – How Medical Crises Change Our Process of Communication
Presenter: Ann Strahle, UIS associate professor of communication
Moderator: Terri Noel, founder and owner of Encore Consulting & Publishing 

Friday, Nov. 6 – Social Justice on the Prairie: Local to Global
Panelists: Larry Golden, UIS professor emeritus; Jan Droegkamp, UIS professor emerita; Tiffani Saunders, UIS assistant professor of sociology and African American studies
Moderator: Rev. Susan Phillips, pastor of First Presbyterian Church 

Wednesday, Nov. 18 – Streaming the Future: Impact of Cable News Networks and Social Media

UIS Lunch & Learn Series presents “Rochester and The State Capitol”

WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield’s Office of Advancement, Alumni SAGE Society, Chancellor’s Office and the Illinois State Historical Society presents “Rochester and The State Capitol” as part of the Lunch and Learn Series.

WHEN: Thursday, March 29, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: UIS Student Union Ballroom, 2251 Richard Wright Drive, Springfield

DETAILS: Raymond and Pamela Bruzan, teachers, writers, environmentalists and community boosters from Rochester, will present “Cotton, Violins, and Shots in the Night: A Timeline Visit to Rochester, Illinois.” Presenting “How the 6th Illinois Capitol Stayed in Springfield” will be Mark Sorensen, Macon County Historian, former assistant director of the Illinois State Archives and past president of the Illinois State Historical Society.

The cost for the hot buffet lunch and program is $23/per person. Reservations are requested, as seating is limited. The registration deadline is one week prior to each event.

The final Lunch & Learn event of the semester will be “From Prairie to Sustainable U” on May 2. These lunch-time programs will stimulate thinking as they build upon the University’s tradition of open and intelligent dialogue.

WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield’s Office of Advancement, Alumni SAGE Society, Chancellor’s Office and the Illinois State Historical Society presents “Celebrating Culture and History” as part of the Lunch and Learn Series.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: UIS Student Union Ballroom, 2251 Richard Wright Drive, Springfield

DETAILS: Elizabeth Alexander and Nell Clay, board members of the Central Illinois African American History Museum, will share the vision of the city’s newest cultural center as they present “We Have a Dream: The Future of Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum.” James Cornelius, Henry Horner Lincoln Collection, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Museum, will present “Lincoln, Lost and Found: Mysteries and Wonders of Illinois’ Lincoln Collection.”

The cost for the hot buffet lunch and program is $23/per person. Reservations are requested, as seating is limited. The registration deadline is one week prior to each event. A discounted series subscription is available for $60/per person.

UIS Lunch & Learn Series presents "Medicine on the Prairie"

WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield’s Office of Advancement, Alumni SAGE Society, Chancellor’s Office and the Illinois State Historical Society presents “Medicine on the Prairie” as part of the Lunch and Learn Series.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Public Affairs Center (PAC) Conference Room C/D, located on the lower level of the PAC on the UIS campus.

DETAILS: A robust professional medical education and training program has spurred growth in high-quality healthcare, local business, education programs, and cultural diversity. Dr. Kevin Dorsey, dean and provost of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will reflect on his tenure and offer a glimpse of the future of healthcare. Dr. Virginia Dolan, pediatrician, will speak on her experience as a medical student, her career path as a pediatrician and changes in the profession impacting women.

The cost for the hot buffet lunch and program is $23/per person. Reservations are requested, as seating is limited. Seating is available in the back for those who do not purchase the luncheon buffet.

These lunch-time programs are designed to stimulate thinking as they build upon the university's tradition of open and intelligent dialogue.

The Lunch & Learn Series will conclude for the semester on November 18 with “Vietnam: A Catalyst of Change”.
